The Hickstead Derby

Posted by

Team Equi-Kids NEW pop up shop !

After 6 months of faceless internet selling Team EK decided it was time to take the giant leap and set up shop and where better to test the water than The Hickstead Derby? ( we don't like to do things by half )

Sounds simple ... ..Well let us tell you if you are indecisive to start with then trade stands are not for you ! Countless hours where spent deliberating what size marquee to buy, what stock to take, how many, what sizes, what colours and the list goes on. Not to mention the long sleepless nights thinking of all the things that could possibly go wrong " what if we sell all our stock on day one, what if we don't sell anything ! "

The day finally arrived and all decisions where made ( so we thought ) and we even had a practise set up!

Getting the Marque up and the stock laid out didn't take us long and we had our feet up enjoying a glass of bubbly before we knew it .... little did we know what was in store !

The day started off with a nice breakfast and coffee whilst we sat enjoying the rare sight of the sun with the odd shopper appreciating the store. …the clock struck 11am and I think every single person at Hickstead descended upon us.

There were old clothes being tossed aside as new outfits were put together, boots on and off, endless rummaging through stock boxes and plenty of great conversations with lots of lovely children.

By 6pm peace had been restored and the shop was back in order. A very tired and pleasantly surprised Equi-Kids headed off for some food and well deserved sleep.

The next few days the same routine was followed in between dragging everything into the middle of the shop when the heavens opened and drenched the whole of Hickstead and its visitors.

Sunday afternoon 2.30pm the shopping village had been deserted as The Derby began ! The long painful process of packing was well underway and we were thinking we could make a quick escape! How wrong we were. The rain had pretty much trapped everyone in the show ground and the only way out was to be towed by a tractor!

We joined the long queue of people waiting to be dragged out and finally after 2 hours were towed by a tractor being pulled by 2 gaitors !

As soon as we arrived home the muddy lorry was ditched along with everything in it and team Equi-Kids headed for showers and beds!

What a fantastic experience and week we had ! Meeting our customers face to face was brilliant especially some of the very talented and cheeky children, talking to their Equi-Mums and finding out what they would like to see on the stand.

We loved it so much we booked in for The Royal International @ Hickstead four weeks later.
